The published formula
How the Dark Activity Score is computed
- Score = 100 x (0.40 x surge percentile + 0.30 x dark share percentile + 0.20 x dark dollars percentile + 0.10 x consistency percentile). Every percentile is computed within the tracked set: the tickers with FINRA dark pool volume in the latest published week.
- Surge (40%): this week's dark pool shares divided by the ticker's median weekly dark pool shares over the prior 4 published weeks. Above 2.0 carries a NEW SURGE badge.
- Dark share (30%): dark pool shares as a share of the ticker's FINRA-reported off-exchange volume (dark pools plus the non-ATS channel).
- Dark dollars (20%): FINRA's published weekly notional (dollar) total for the ticker's dark pool volume, so high-priced tickers do not lose to penny volume on a share-count technicality.
- Consistency (10%): how many of the last 4 published weeks (including the current one) the ticker's dark share exceeded its own trailing 8-week median. At least 3 of 4 at 50%+ dark share carries a CHRONIC DARK badge.
- ETF, ETN, fund and trust tickers carry an ETF MATH badge: they trade structurally in dark pools (creation and redemption flow), so their scores reflect plumbing, not accumulation. Tickers with fewer than 2 weeks of history are scored on the components available, reweighted.
- Honesty floor: the score is a relative ranking of where hidden liquidity concentrated within our tracked universe, computed from weekly FINRA aggregates on a publication delay. It is not a live feed, not a per-trade view, and not a signal that anyone is buying or selling.

What a tracker can and cannot see
What a dark pool tracker can and cannot see
A tracker can see
- Which dark pools (alternative trading systems) reported your ticker in the latest FINRA weekly file, and how many shares and trades each one carried
- The dark pool share of a ticker's FINRA-reported off-exchange volume, and the 8-week trend per ticker
- The weekly dollar total (notional) FINRA publishes for each ticker's dark pool volume, plus a sortable Dark Activity Score ranking the whole tracked universe
- Which venues lead: Intelligent Cross, UBS ATS, Sigma X2 and the rest of the roughly 34 active FINRA-reporting dark pools
- A daily estimated off-exchange share per ticker, from FINRA's same-day CNMS file, labeled as an estimate on every view
No tracker can see
- Live dark pool prints. There is no live per-print ATS feed at retail; anyone promising one is overstating their data source
- Per-trade prices, trade sizes, or whether the volume was buying or selling. FINRA's weekly file aggregates per ticker: share counts, trade counts, and a total weekly dollar notional. Nothing in it identifies individual trades
- Dark pools' share of total market volume. FINRA's file covers off-exchange volume only, so we never present it as a share of the whole tape
What we track, and when. Tapeboard publishes the FINRA OTC Transparency weekly file for hundreds of tracked tickers, frozen per week: per-ticker dark pool volume, per dark pool, plus the non-ATS off-exchange channel. It is weekly FINRA data, published about 2.5 weeks after the week ends for large caps (NMS Tier 1), about 4.5 weeks for smaller caps. Nothing fresher exists until FINRA publishes the next week, and we state the lag plainly instead of dressing delayed data up as live.

FAQ
What is a dark pool tracker?
A tool that shows which dark pools (alternative trading systems) reported volume in a ticker, and how much. An honest one runs on FINRA's weekly ATS transparency file, because that is the only dark pool data that exists at retail. This tracker shows the latest published FINRA week per ticker and per dark pool, with the publication lag stated on every view.
Where can I see dark pool prints?
Not live, and not at retail. Dark pool trades report to FINRA, which publishes them aggregated per week, on a delay. The closest live signal is unusual volume on the lit exchanges, which is why our dark pool scanner page explains that proxy honestly. The weekly FINRA archive here is the real record.
How current is the data on this page?
Weekly FINRA data, published about 2.5 weeks after the week ends for large caps (NMS Tier 1), about 4.5 weeks for smaller caps. Each table states the exact FINRA week it shows and the date FINRA first published that week's file. These are the newest weekly numbers FINRA has published, not a live feed.
Does heavy dark pool volume mean big investors are buying?
No. Dark pool volume is hidden liquidity: it says where institutions chose to trade away from the lit exchanges, nothing about direction. FINRA reports share counts, trade counts, and a weekly notional total per ticker, but no per-trade prices, sizes, or sides. A week of heavy dark pool volume can accompany accumulation, distribution, or two-sided market making.
What is the Dark Activity Score?
A 0-100 relative ranking of dark pool activity within the tickers our packs track for the latest published FINRA week. Each ticker scores on four components, converted to percentiles within the tracked set: surge (40% weight, this week's dark pool shares vs the ticker's median over the prior 4 published weeks), dark share (30%, dark pools' share of the ticker's FINRA-reported off-exchange volume), dark dollars (20%, FINRA's published weekly notional total for the ticker's dark pool volume), and consistency (10%, how many of the last 4 published weeks the ticker's dark share exceeded its own trailing 8-week median). Tickers with fewer than 2 weeks of history are scored on the components available, reweighted. The full formula is stated on the dark pool tracker page. It is a relative ranking of where hidden liquidity concentrated, not a signal that anyone is buying or selling.
What is the estimated off-exchange share?
The share of a ticker's consolidated volume that FINRA's CNMS daily file reports as off-exchange volume: dark pools plus the non-ATS channel where internalizers and wholesale market makers report. It is an estimated off-exchange share — media-reported trades only, includes internalizers/wholesalers, not per-ATS, understates weekly FINRA totals by ~10–15% — and every number we show from it carries that label. The consolidated-volume denominator is the public market's total daily volume for the same trading day.
