Where Finviz wins

Screening on financial statements

Finviz Elite shows 8 years of financial statements, against 3 on the free plan, with advanced filters, up to 100 screener rows a page and a 10 second refresh (Finviz Elite page, checked 2026-10-08). If your screen is "small caps with growing revenue and healthy margins over several years", Finviz is the right tool.

The heatmap

The Finviz map is the one most retail traders know, and Elite adds intraday maps. Tapeboard has a heatmap for the S&P 500, sector ETFs and crypto, colored by day, week, month and longer windows. It is narrower than Finviz.

Alerts, exports and the free plan

Elite includes unlimited alerts and exports to Excel and CSV. The free plan is generous for a screener: delayed data, basic filters, the map and 50 saved presets. Tapeboard Free is a smaller scanner with a simulator and filings reader.

Where Tapeboard wins

Short interest and borrow fee in the screen

Tapeboard exposes short interest, borrow fee, days to cover and options activity as scanner filters. Finviz has a short interest filter and no borrow fee. If your screens look like "high borrow fee, rising volume, near a catalyst", Tapeboard is the focused tool.

Short-squeeze setup score with published odds

The Tapeboard Short Squeeze Score (setup v6, since 2026-10-07) ranks heavily shorted US names (short interest of at least 15% of float) by their historical odds of a large move: 0.6 x 20-day volatility percentile (largest daily move excluded) + 0.2 x 5-day float-rotation percentile + 0.2 x last-session relative-volume percentile. Borrow fee, days-to-cover and short volume are shown for context at zero weight. The formula, the gate and the calibrated out-of-sample odds (top-10 names: +20% within five sessions 16.6% of the time, -20% 12.0%) are published. Finviz has no composite. See the short squeeze score methodology for the derivation.

SEC filings on every scanner result

When a name on the scanner files a Form 4, 8-K or offering document, it shows on the ticker within minutes of EDGAR publication, with dilution tags and an AI summary on Pro. Finviz links filings from the quote page and has no filings feed.

A live hits feed instead of a 10-second refresh

Finviz Elite re-runs the screen every 10 seconds. Tapeboard's hits feed streams every fire as its own row — just-hit, re-hit, new entrant — with the plain-English reason it fired, so you see the run-up build instead of re-reading a table.

A simulator and a journal in the same tab

The paper trading simulator is free on every tier, and the trade journal auto-logs every simulator trade with setup tagging on playbooks (Pro) and free CSV import from Schwab, Webull and TradeStation exports. Finviz tracks portfolios and has no simulator or journal. Pro is $39 a month and Terminal is $79 a month, which adds unlimited AI, formula alerts and bulk export.

Finviz alternative FAQ

Is there a Finviz alternative?

Tapeboard Pro at $39 a month is a Finviz alternative for traders who want a scanner next to SEC filings, options chains and the Short Squeeze Score. Finviz Elite is $39.50/mo, or $24.96/mo billed annually ($299.50 a year), per the Finviz Elite page checked 2026-10-08. Finviz wins on screener depth and the heatmap. Tapeboard wins on filings, short interest and squeeze tracking.

Tapeboard vs Finviz: which is better for screening?

For screens built on short interest, borrow fee, days to cover, options activity and fresh SEC filings, Tapeboard is the focused tool. For screening on financial statements, Finviz Elite shows 8 years of statements against 3 on the free plan, 100 rows a page and a 10 second refresh. The two answer different questions.

Best free real-time stock scanner?

Finviz free is delayed and strong on fundamental filters. TradingView free is delayed and strong on charting. Tapeboard Free gives one live scanner panel with one live preset and every new account starts with 7 days of Pro. Full real-time scanning with SEC filing alerts is on Pro at $39 a month.

Best stock heatmap free?

The Finviz map is the one most traders know, and the free plan includes it. Elite adds intraday maps. Tapeboard has its own heatmap for the S&P 500, sector ETFs and crypto, colored by day, week, month and longer windows. It does not match the Finviz map for depth.

Is Finviz Elite worth it?

Finviz Elite is worth it if you screen on fundamentals, want real-time quotes and charts on the screener, 12 charts in one layout, unlimited alerts and exports to Excel or CSV. At $39.50/mo it is fairly priced for that. If your screens use short interest, borrow fee, options activity or new SEC filings, Tapeboard Pro at $39 a month covers that workflow.

Best penny stock screener?

Finviz free covers the basic filters on price, volume and change. Trade Ideas is the heavier paid scanner. Tapeboard Pro at $39 a month adds short interest, borrow fee and squeeze score filters on top of the basics, which suits penny stock day traders who care about borrow availability.

Is there a Finviz alternative for swing trading?

For daily-timeframe swing work, Tapeboard Pro at $39 a month ships a Swing preset group: names within 10% of the 52-week high on 1.5x relative volume, pullback entries where RSI-14 has cooled inside an uptrend, deep pullbacks bouncing on volume, and a $10B+ large-cap trend screen. Honest scope: the Tapeboard scanner runs on a movers-based universe of roughly 500 active symbols rather than the full market, so a quiet three-week base that never moves 5% in a day is outside it. Finviz Elite screens the whole market with fundamental filters, which is why many swing traders keep it for the wide sweep. Where Tapeboard pays for itself is the live loop: the swing screens stream next to SEC filings, alerts and the trade journal in one tab.
